Do pugs really not hear — or just ignore us?
Sometimes — actually, quite often — Jabba doesn’t hear.
Or at least, that’s what it looks like.
Because when it comes to snacks, fridge doors, or the words “let’s go”, her hearing suddenly becomes… exceptional.
This is exactly why so many people wonder why do pugs ignore you — and whether it’s really a hearing issue, or something much more intentional.
—
Jabba:
That’s because pug ears are floppy. Technically speaking, it doesn’t really help.
Jojo:
Fascinating, considering you have absolutely no trouble hearing the fridge opening, a snack opening, or the command, “let’s go”.
Jabba:
Because, Jojo, I hear exactly as much as I need to.
Why waste my ears listening to unnecessary information, pointless remarks, or empty words with no meaning?
Jojo:
Oh, I see. So it’s a strategy?
Jabba:
More like genetics.
—
Pug behavior and selective hearing
Jabba:
Look at Mum — she’s exactly the same. When she’s writing or concentrating, the outside world simply doesn’t exist.
Jojo:
That’s true. It annoys Dad a bit. Although I think he’s made peace with it by now…
Jabba:
See? Selective hearing is not a flaw. It’s focus.
Jojo:
Or survival.
Jabba:
Exactly.
Many people think dogs ignore commands because they don’t understand.
But life with a pug teaches you something different.
They understand perfectly.
They just decide whether it’s worth responding.
—
What life with a pug teaches you
Jabba:
Or maybe it’s just one of those female traits? I never thought I’d admit to that. But I’m older and wiser now.
Jojo:
Now you actually made me laugh.
Jabba:
No, seriously!
Jojo:
Alright, alright — it’s like this:
The ladies have their little moments. They say nothing and still expect us guys to understand what’s up.
But we prefer simple instructions.
Jabba:
Simple is boring.
Jojo:
Simple is clear.
Jabba:
Clear is overrated.
Jojo:
And this is exactly why communication becomes… complicated.
Jabba:
Not complicated. Selective.
Jojo:
That’s one way to describe it.
—
Jojo:
Then we guys’are surprised when the silence starts and we panic.
How are we supposed to know whether it’s creative focus or silent resentment?
Jabba:
You’re supposed to feel it.
Jojo:
Feel what?
Jabba:
Everything.
Jojo:
That sounds exhausting.
Jabba:
That’s because you’re not evolved enough.
Jojo:
Or maybe I just prefer instructions.
—
Living with a pug often means accepting that not everything requires a response.
Sometimes silence is intentional.
Sometimes ignoring is a decision.
And sometimes, pretending not to hear is simply the most efficient way to move through life.
Jabba:
Also… sometimes I just don’t feel like getting up.
Jojo:
Now that sounds more honest.
Jabba:
Honesty is important.
Jojo:
So is walking when someone calls you.
Jabba:
Depends who is calling.
Jojo:
And what they’re offering.
Jabba:
Exactly.
—
Maybe that’s the real answer to pug behavior.
They don’t ignore you because they don’t care.
They ignore you because they know they can choose.
