Daily Life in Greece: What You Can See From a Couch

The couch is better for observing the world than many Greek kafenío.
From the couch, you can see everything that truly matters.
And all the stuff that doesn’t, too.

Following the Sun Around the House

Jabba: Ohhh… coffee! In Greece, even a pug can fall in love with coffee!

Jojo: I love the couch. Just as it is. Ours. Warm. Sun slipping through the window like it knows exactly where to land.

Jabba: Ah! And the sunlight moving across the cushions! It’s like it has a plan.

Jojo: You have to follow it. That’s a half-day occupation. Very serious.

Jabba: That’s true… daily life in Greece is basically just following the sun around the house.

Jojo: You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Jabba: Not at all! It’s… important work.

Jojo: Essential, I’d say.

Jabba: And reading mythology! And watching The Lord of the Rings with Mum and Brother! Oh, those elves…

Jojo: The best moments are when everyone is quiet. No one moving. Just breathing, thinking… existing.

Jabba: And the dishwasher!

Jojo: Are you talking about Dad washing the dishes?

Jabba: …yes.

Jojo: A classic feature of daily life in Greece.

Jabba: Oh! And the stars at night! You can really see them here. Like properly see them.

Jojo: That’s because there’s less noise. Not just sound. Everything.

When Nothing Happens (And Everything Does)

Jabba: And during the day — naps. Serious naps.

Jojo: Strategic naps.

Jabba: Long ones.

Jojo: Necessary ones.

Jabba: Oh! The sea, just around the corner!

Jojo: Doesn’t count. It has to be visible from the couch.

Jabba: That’s not fair…

Jojo: We’re talking about observation. Not imagination.

Jabba: But you can feel it. The sea. Even from here.

Jojo: That’s true.

Jabba: That’s part of daily life in Greece too, isn’t it? Even when you don’t see it… it’s there.

Jojo: Like hunger.

Jabba: Jojo!

Jojo: Constant. Reliable. Important.

Jabba: Mum’s smile!

Jojo: Sharing food. With us, obviously.

Jabba: Cuddling! Oh, how I love cuddling…

Jojo: Breakfast. And second breakfast.

Jabba: Petting!

Jojo: Snoring. Rhythmic. Calming.

Jabba: And our cuddling! Side by side! Ah…

Jojo: The optimal thermal arrangement.

Jabba: A friend. Which is obviously you, Jojo!

Jojo: Food, sleep, and the couch.

Jabba: That’s your summary?

Jojo: I’m simplifying.

Jabba: You always do.

Jojo: It helps.

Jabba: But there’s more. There’s always more. Like… the way afternoons stretch here. Slowly. Like nothing is in a hurry.

Jojo: That’s because nothing is.

Jabba: Back home, things felt faster.

Jojo: Here, even time takes naps.

Jabba: And people… they don’t rush past. They stop. They talk. Even if it’s just a few words.

Jojo: Especially in winter.

Jabba: Or early mornings. When the light is still soft.

Jojo: Or late afternoons, when everything turns golden.

Jabba: Ohhh… golden light!

Jojo: Focus, Jabba.

Jabba: I am focused!

Jojo: On light.

Jabba: It’s important!

Jojo: It is.

Jabba: And the sounds… you can hear everything. A car passing far away. A dog barking somewhere. Birds.

Jojo: And sometimes… nothing at all.

Jabba: I like that part.

Jojo: Me too.

Jabba: Do you think this is what daily life in Greece really is? Not the beaches and crowds and all that…

Jojo: That’s for visitors.

Jabba: And this?

Jojo: This is for staying.

Jabba: Sitting on a couch?

Jojo: Observing. Waiting. Being.

Jabba: That sounds very serious.

Jojo: It isn’t.

Jabba: No?

Jojo: It just looks like it from the outside.

Jabba: I think… I like it best when nothing much is happening.

Jojo: That’s when everything important is happening.

Jabba: Oh…

Jojo: You see?

Jabba: I do.

Jojo: Good.

Jabba: So… the couch really is better than a kafenío?

Jojo: Less crowded.

Jabba: Better snacks?

Jojo: More reliable.

Jabba: Better company?

Jojo: Obviously.

Jabba: Even without the sea view?

Jojo: Especially without it.

Jabba: That makes no sense.

Jojo: It does if you’re paying attention.

Jabba: I am!

Jojo: Then you already know.

Jabba: Know what?

Jojo: We already have the rest.
